Oh! The places we’ll go!

My current quilting setup – a New English Quilter frame clamped to the dining room table, a JUKI straight stitch sewing machine, and Superior Threads, all lit by some lovely autumn afternoon light.

Hello and welcome to the adventure! Today is the day! We’re off to great places, we’re off and away!

I’m Emily, a quilter of 12 years, wife of 9 months, and about to be a mother of one brand new baby girl! I’m starting this quilting blog to help encourage me to keep in touch with my creative side as I start my journey into first-time motherhood. Expect to see baby-related projects, quilting projects, and thread-painting projects as we move through the year.

My first project is baby-related. With less than a month to go until baby girl arrives (eek!) the nesting instinct is kicking in just a little bit! My baby shower was Dr Seuss themed, and my mom found this incredible Oh, The Places You’ll Go! themed fabric:

Each block has a quote from Dr Seuss

I love the fantastic characters!

I quilted it using a variety of different threads from Superior Threads, just highlighting and echoing my way around the images. The plan is to create a tactile baby book from these printed blocks – I’ll be posting an update on that soon(ish). Reading the quotes again as I quilted them was really fun – Oh, The Places You’ll Go! is one of my absolute favourite Dr Seuss books, so it was a complete delight to mix it with quilting.

This was a fabulous mini-project to get me started, and I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to actually quilt in my home. For the longest time I haven’t had the space or equipment to quilt at home, but I finally got a frame, machine, and some thread together, and it has been so rewarding to see that I can start quilting again!

The beautiful thing about having a table-top frame that packs away easily is that I can assemble the frame in minutes, and start or continue a project for however long I have, be that 10 minutes, or two hours. Right now the only place that the frame will fit is on my dining room table, which gets used quite a bit for other things, so it’s great that I can just lift the poles out of the side-arms and put them away in a corner until the space is available again.

With one project done, and more on the way, I sure am excited about the places I’ll go with my quilting frame!

See you next time!
